2007 Sandler Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir

This is only the second time I’ve bottled an SLH Pinot, the first one being the 2004. Thanks to my affiliation with ROAR and August West, I have access to some pretty nice barrels of bulk wine that would be rarely be available through the normal wine broker channels. Quality wine in such small quantities seldom makes it onto the bulk market.

The ’07 Sandler SLH PN shows off the ripeness of that great California vintage with its rich palate feel and intense fruit aromas. I would say this is the first Sandler wine that’s perfectly ready to go and doesn’t need a lot of bottle aging. I’ll be curious to see how it develops over the years, but I’d recommend trying whenever you’d like.

2006 Sandler KASARWIL Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Yes, it’s a Cabernet. My friends, Bob and Doris Rivett, offered me some Cabernet and Zinfandel from their Dry Creek Valley vineyard, named after their three children, back in the fall of 2006. Many of you have already tasted the 2006 Sandler Dry Creek Zinfandel of which a high percentage came from KASARWIL. Here is the Cabernet, which I let age for almost two years since bottling.

This is definitely a Cabernet made by a Pinot guy. It has distinct Cabernet flavors but also shows a delicacy more similar to Pinot. The nose is full of dark berries with subtle herbaceous hints. And on the palate the ripeness of this very warm Dry Creek site is apparent with the round tannins, lower acidity and nice fruit flavors. I believe this ’06 Cab will age nicely for at least another 5 years.

2008 Sandler Connell Vineyard Syrah

Sally and Brian Connell have yet again provided me with some beautiful Syrah fruit. I virtually do nothing to these grapes, and within a few weeks, they have transformed themselves into barrels of outstanding, cool-climate Syrah.

The 2008 Connell Syrah has more in common with the ’07 than it does with either the ’05 or the ’06, for those of you who have tried the previous three releases of this wine. That familiar white pepper fragrance is the most prominent feature of the nose. Many people who try it say it reminds them more of a Northern Rhone than a California Syrah. In spite of the 100% whole cluster fermentation, the tannins are not obtrusive, although they will most likely help this wine age gracefully for many years to come. Don’t be in too much of a hurry to try one of these, but with a good, multi-hour decanting, the ’08 Connell Syrah is drinking very well.

2008 Sandler Buck Hill Vineyard Zinfandel

Following on the heels of the extremely popular ’07 Buck Hill Zin, here is my second attempt at a wine from Randy Apel’s Santa Rosa vineyard. 2008 was both a warmer and a cooler vintage than 2007. It was hot in late August and early September, but quickly cooled down for the rest of the harvest. Zinfandel is normally a very late-ripening variety, and in ’08 there was as much hang time as in ‘07, but the ‘08 grapes were a few brix lower. The result is a slightly more restrained but still fully ripe Zinfandel.

With a nose full of brambly wild blackberries, the ’08 Buck Hill shows classic Zinfandel character. The palate is ripe, rich and well-balanced, with perfect acidity. I’m not one to age Zinfandels for very long, and I like to drink them within three years of their release. There are many folks who disagree with that approach to Zin enjoyment, so maybe hang onto a couple of these to see how they age over the years.
